Rhubarb is not a conventional fragrance material — which is exactly why Douglas Little used it as the centrepiece of this composition. In old herbal traditions, rhubarb was less ingredient than incantation: a plant taken quietly from the garden's edge to restore balance and move stagnant energy. Rhubarb Thief has that quality. It doesn't settle into something comfortable and familiar. It stays interesting.
The opening is sharp and alive: grapefruit pith delivers a bitter brightness, dry rather than sweet; Texas cedarwood adds a clean grain; angelica brings a musky, medicinal herbaceousness that feels both grounding and a little occult. Thyme and verbena sharpen the green edges; carrot seed introduces a quiet earthiness underneath. Then the stalk snaps and rhubarb arrives at the heart — vivid, vegetal and mouthwatering, with none of the sweetness you might expect. Pink jasmine softens the sharpness with a translucent warmth; cypress adds a cool, resinous verticality. The base is elemi — citrus-tinged and balsamic — and oakmoss, damp and mineral, connecting the whole composition back to the earth it came from.
